Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR can be used when the mind and body’s natural healing processes are overwhelmed and traditional talk therapy is not enough.

EMDR is a therapeutic process that intentionally engages both hemispheres of the brain, helping traumatic memories which feel present and active in the body become memories of the past, without feeling like one is constantly in fight, flight, or freeze mode.  By focusing on specific memories, emotions, or sensations, and adding bi-lateral (eye movement or different forms of tapping) stimulation, the brain begins to problem solve and heal.

EMDR can be helpful for adults, youth, and children, as we are all susceptible to traumatic experiences. Outcomes of EMDR can include desensitization to negative emotional experiences and memories, reprocessing of traumatic memories into more adaptive ways of thinking, as well as altering negative self beliefs. EMDR invites self-compassion, patience and understanding for oneself. This is a powerful way to overcome the lasting effects of trauma.

You may find EMDR helpful if your child is stuck in:

Intense sadness or depression

Anxiety

Fears or phobias

Grief

Self esteem issues

Negative beliefs

PTSD symptoms such as flashbacks

Avoidance

Nightmares
