LGBTQIA+ Support

Navigating one’s identity is one of the most important processes in adolescence and young adulthood.

When a teenager begins to question or discover new aspects of their gender and sexuality, it is vital for them to have a space where they can feel safe and understood. At Willow Tree, your teen will have the opportunity to safely explore these facets of their identity in a collaborative and affirming environment.

We recognize that queer kids navigate unique challenges as they grow up. LGBTQIA+ youth are not just exploring their gender or sexuality; they are also doing the important developmental work of managing friendships, romantic relationships, family dynamics, school expectations, and future planning.

At Willow Tree, the complexities of each of these developmental tasks can be explored with sensitivity and support.

We can help if your child or teen is:

Experiencing unhappiness in their body

Confused or searching for understanding about their sexuality or gender

Developing relationships that are overwhelming or codependent

Contemplating coming out to friends or extended family

Isn’t feeling safe at school

Is withdrawn

Is self harming

Struggling to make IRL relationships and is overly reliant on online relationships.

Is experiencing depression, anxiety, or obsessions

FAQ

We believe it our job, as therapists, to help people feel safe to explore and discover who they are and to be confident in their identity. Questioning is a process that should be honored and given a safe space for, without anxiety or agenda. At Willow Tree, we also have a strong background in child development and understand the stages of development and the exploration that takes place during different ages and stages.

Coming out, outwardly declaring part of a person’s internal identity, is not something that is required by any person. If and when your child “comes out” will be wholly up to them. In therapy with all of our clients, we make it clear that there is space here for a full range of identities and preferences. You can show that same openness at home.

No, we are all cisgendered, heterosexual, married females. If having a Queer therapist is important for you or your child, we can refer you to local clinics that have great Queer therapists that can offer that level of understanding.
